In a world where we can file taxes, bank, and even manage our healthcare online, it’s baffling that our government hasn’t caught up when it comes to voting. Why are we still running our elections like the internet doesn’t exist?
There have been several cases of ballots failing, from machine malfunctions to misplaced paper votes. Not to mention, voter suppression laws disproportionately affect marginalized communities, keeping many from the polls. Voting online could easily solve many of these issues, yet the fear of security breaches and manipulation keeps this option off the table.
However, if we trust the internet enough to handle our taxes, why not our votes? In fact, countries like Estonia have successfully implemented online voting systems, demonstrating that it’s not only possible but also efficient. It’s time we stop running our government like we’re stuck in the 20th century and start utilizing the technology at our fingertips to make our voices heard. It’s good enough for taxes, so why not for voting? Let me know below.
